The maritime industry is a vast and dynamic world of opportunity, yet many remain unaware of the diverse career paths it offers. From the Royal and Merchant Navy to the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, Fishing, Yachting, and Sail Training, life at sea is filled with adventure and purpose. Prefer to stay on land? You could become a sailmaker, rigger, shipwright, meteorologist, ship designer, researcher, or conservationist.
At Pelican of London, we offer an alternative approach to learning. One that is hands-on, immersive, and inspiring. Our voyages provide practical, real-world experience, preparing you for a fulfilling career in the maritime industry. While at sea, you’ll develop a wide range of skills, including seamanship, navigation, helming, engineering, sail repair, rigging, and working aloft, all within an authentic, high-energy environment.
As part of your journey, you’ll have the option to complete RYA-accredited courses, such as the Competent Crew and Watch Leader certificates. By gaining sea time, industry-recognised qualifications, and valuable hands-on experience, you’ll be well on your way to employment in the maritime world. We also provide guidance on career pathways, sea time requirements, and qualifications, ensuring you’re fully equipped for success.

The support doesn’t end when you step ashore. Our shore-based career mentoring and networking days connect you with industry professionals, while our partnerships offer discounted Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) courses, including STCW Basic Safety Training, the Approved Engine Course (AEC), and VHF Radio certification. We also provide further sea time and development opportunities through volunteering placements.
On board tall ship Pelican of London, you’re not just exploring the ocean, you’re charting a course toward a meaningful, lifelong career in the maritime industry.
